Pigmentation / Sun Damage

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to the natural colouring of the skin, determined by melanin, a pigment produced by specialised skin cells called melanocytes. When these cells are overactive or unevenly distributed, it can lead to hyperpigmentation, causing dark spots, patches, or an uneven skin tone.

Characteristics

Pigmentation appears as dark spots, patches, or uneven skin tone, ranging from light to dark brown, often caused by sun exposure, hormonal changes, or skin injuries. It can be localised or widespread, with defined or diffuse edges, and may worsen over time without treatment.

Causes

Pigmentation is often triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, or skin injuries.

Sun damage, also known as photo damage, results from prolonged or excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV rays can break down collagen and elastin, leading to premature aging, wrinkles, and sagging skin. It also accelerates melanin production, causing pigmentation issues such as sunspots, freckles, and uneven skin tone. Over time, sun damage can even increase the risk of skin cancer.

At Melbourne Skin, we specialise in treating all types of pigmentation and reversing the visible effects of sun damage through tailored treatments and cutting-edge technologies, restoring a radiant and even complexion.
