Diathermy

What is Diathermy?

Diathermy is a precise and effective treatment used to address various skin concerns by utilising high-frequency electrical currents to generate heat in targeted areas of the skin. This heat works to coagulate blood vessels, remove skin irregularities, and stimulate collagen production, making it ideal for the treatment of minor vascular and skin issues. Diathermy is widely used for removing skin tags, treating broken capillaries, and improving the appearance of other superficial skin imperfections, resulting in smoother, clearer, and more even-toned skin.

What Does Diathermy Treat?

Diathermy is highly versatile and can be used to address a range of concerns, including:

  • Skin tags

  • Broken capillaries (on the face and body)

  • Cherry angiomas

  • Milia

  • Spider veins

  • Benign skin growths

  • Facial redness and rosacea-related capillaries

Contraindications

While diathermy is safe for most individuals, it may not be suitable for everyone. Contraindications include:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Active skin infections or conditions (e.g., eczema, psoriasis)

  • Presence of pacemakers or other electrical devices

  • Skin with excessive sun damage or recent sunburn

  • Certain medical conditions—consult your clinician before treatment

Is It Painful?

Diathermy is generally well-tolerated, with most clients experiencing only mild discomfort during the procedure. The sensation is often described as a brief pinprick or warming sensation. For added comfort, a numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area if necessary.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

Diathermy is a safe and minimally invasive treatment with minimal risks when performed by an experienced professional. Temporary redness, mild swelling, or scabbing in the treated area may occur, but these effects typically resolve within a few days. Following pre- and post-care instructions reduces the risk of complications and ensures the best results.

Pre & Post-Care Instructions

Before Your Treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure or tanning for at least 2 weeks prior.

  • Do not apply active skincare products (e.g., retinol or exfoliants) for 7 days before treatment.

  • Refrain from waxing, plucking, or bleaching the treatment area for at least 7 days.

  • Consult your clinician about any medications or skin concerns that may affect treatment.

After Your Treatment:

  • Apply SPF 50+ daily and avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks.

  • Avoid swimming, saunas, and strenuous exercise for 48 hours post-treatment.

  • Keep the treated area clean and hydrated with recommended post-care products.

  • Refrain from picking or scratching any scabs that form as the skin heals.

  • Avoid active skincare ingredients or exfoliants for 7 days after treatment.

What Will My Skin Look Like After Treatment?

Immediately after diathermy, the treated area may appear slightly red and swollen, with minor scabbing or crusting in some cases. These effects are temporary and typically subside within a few days, revealing clearer, smoother skin as the area heals. Full results are usually visible within 1-2 weeks, depending on the extent of the treatment.

How Often Should I Have This Treatment?

Diathermy treatments are typically performed as needed, with many skin irregularities resolved in a single session. For more extensive concerns or maintenance, your clinician will recommend a personalised treatment plan to achieve and maintain optimal results.
